Foxhills: The Surrey Escape That Feels Worlds Away From London

By  |

There is something wonderfully indulgent about escaping the city without having to travel too far. Leaving London behind, watching the buildings give way to winding country roads and green open spaces, and arriving somewhere that instantly makes you feel as though you have pressed pause on everyday life.

That is exactly what a stay at Foxhills Club & Resort offers.

Set within 400 acres of Surrey countryside, Foxhills is the kind of destination where the pace naturally slows. The grounds are expansive, the setting is beautifully peaceful and there is an almost immediate sense of tranquillity. Yet, despite feeling wonderfully removed from the city, it is surprisingly accessible from London, making it an ideal choice for a weekend escape when you want all the feeling of a countryside retreat without a long journey.

And once you arrive, there is very little reason to leave.

From beautifully appointed rooms and sprawling grounds to multiple swimming pools, a full-service HealthSpa and an impressive range of sporting facilities, Foxhills manages to combine the atmosphere of a luxury country house with everything you could want from a modern resort.

A room overlooking the Surrey countryside

We stayed in one of Foxhills’ ground-floor Lyne House rooms, and the setting was one of our favourite parts of the stay. The room opened directly onto the golf course, with loungers just outside, the perfect spot to enjoy the peaceful surroundings or unwind at the end of the day.

Inside, the room was spacious and beautifully designed, with plenty of little touches that elevated the experience. The bathroom featured both a bathtub and separate shower, alongside lovely Proverb toiletries, that bring the spa straight to your bathroom. We also loved the Bluetooth speaker and radio, while the smart TV meant we could watch whatever we wanted for a cosy evening in.

But ultimately, it was the view that made the room. Stepping outside to nothing but greenery and the golf course instantly gave us that feeling of being far removed from London.

A resort surrounded by nature

Foxhills’ setting is undoubtedly one of its biggest draws.

Spread across hundreds of acres, the estate gives you an incredible amount of space to explore, with landscaped gardens, woodland, golf courses and open countryside creating a sense of privacy and calm.

It is the perfect setting where you can genuinely breathe a little deeper.

For anyone who spends most of their time surrounded by the energy of London, that sense of space feels particularly luxurious. There is no rush, no traffic outside the window and no pressure to fill every minute of the day. Instead, you can spend the morning exploring the grounds, find a quiet spot to sit with a coffee, head to the spa in the afternoon and finish the evening with dinner, all without ever needing to get back in the car.

That balance is what makes Foxhills so appealing. It is a true countryside retreat, without the inconvenience of travelling hours to get there.

Swim, Switch Off & Unwind

One of the highlights of our stay was undoubtedly Foxhills’ pools and HealthSpa. With five swimming pools across the resort, including a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, there was always somewhere to swim, relax or simply take in the surroundings. We loved the variety, from more lively swimming spaces to tranquil areas designed for switching off.

The HealthSpa takes the experience even further, with thermal facilities, a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, outdoor hot tub and natural spa pool set within the spa garden. Surrounded by Surrey’s greenery, it feels wonderfully peaceful and is the perfect place to slow down and spend a few hours unwinding.

What we loved most was the freedom to move between the different spaces throughout the day, swim, relax poolside, enjoy the thermal facilities and simply take your time. It is an experience that feels genuinely restorative, without ever feeling rushed.

For the sporty, and the not-so-sporty

One of the things that sets Foxhills apart from a traditional spa hotel is the sheer breadth of its sporting offering.

Golf is naturally at the heart of the estate, with the surrounding courses forming part of the landscape, but there is so much more available for guests to enjoy. From tennis and padel to pickleball, fitness facilities and classes, there are plenty of ways to keep active during your stay. Foxhills offers more than 200 activities and experiences, meaning you can make your weekend as energetic as you like.

And if, like us, your idea of the perfect weekend involves a mixture of doing absolutely nothing and doing a little bit of everything, that works too.

You can start your morning with a workout or a game of tennis, spend the afternoon by the pool and finish with a long dinner. Or you can skip the activities altogether and spend the day between your room, the spa and the countryside.

There is no pressure to make your stay any particular way.

An effortless dining experience

Dining is another highlight of the Foxhills experience, with a wealth of options across the estate, from relaxed all-day spaces to more elevated dining experiences.

At the heart of the offering is Lomri, Foxhills’ newest restaurant, bringing the flavours of India’s spice ports to Surrey with fragrant biryanis, slow-cooked curries and tandoor dishes.

For something more relaxed, the Manor Lounge & Bar offers everything from morning coffee and light lunches to cocktails and evening drinks, while Nineteen provides casual brasserie-style dining overlooking the golf course. Flo’s is a bright deli serving fresh, Aussie-inspired dishes, smoothies and family-friendly options, with the Pavilion terrace overlooking the pool and walled garden.

There is also afternoon tea, Champagne afternoon tea, cream teas and seasonal Sunday carveries, giving you plenty of opportunities to make dining part of your stay.

So whether you want a quick coffee, lunch after the pool, drinks or a memorable dinner, there is always somewhere to go without leaving the estate.

Our verdict

Foxhills is more than a hotel and much more than a spa retreat. It is somewhere you can genuinely spend an entire weekend without feeling the need to go anywhere else.

The combination of the beautiful Surrey countryside, luxurious accommodation, extensive wellness facilities, multiple pools, sporting activities, dining and attentive service makes it an incredibly easy place to recommend.

Whether you are looking for a romantic countryside escape, a girls’ weekend, a wellness break, a more active getaway or simply a few days away from the city, Foxhills manages to cater to all of it without compromising on the feeling of luxury.

And while there are plenty of reasons to visit, perhaps the best one is the simplest: you leave feeling as though you have actually had a break.

For Londoners in need of a change of scenery, Foxhills is proof that you do not need to travel far to find somewhere truly special. Just a short journey from the city, surrounded by 400 acres of Surrey countryside, it offers that rare combination of accessibility and escapism, the feeling of being far away, without actually having to go very far at all.

We arrived for a stay and left already thinking about when we could return.
