Get into the Carnival Spirit with this Year’s Notting Hill Fiesta
London’s streets are set to burst into colour, rhythm and flavour once again as the Notting Hill Carnival 2025 takes over West London from Sunday 24th to Monday 25th August. Europe’s largest street festival and a glowing celebration of Caribbean culture, Carnival is more than just a party. It’s a living, dancing testament to resilience, joy, and cultural pride.
What’s Happening at the Carnival This Year?
Expect two full days of non-stop music, dazzling costumes, and street-side feasting. The festivities officially kick off with J’Ouvert in the early hours of Sunday morning – a messy, musical celebration with paint, powder and steel pans. Sunday is known as Family Day, with a more relaxed pace and a focus on community – including the Children’s Parade.
On Monday, the energy intensifies with the Grand Parade. Masqueraders in sequins, feathers and beads wind their way through the streets on floats, backed by booming sound systems playing everything from soca and calypso to dancehall, reggae, and afrobeats.
More than 70 static sound systems, over 30 parade bands, and hundreds of food stalls line the streets – each corner offering a different slice of Caribbean culture.
A Snapshot of Carnival’s Roots
Born out of post-war immigration and the Windrush generation, the Notting Hill Carnival was established in 1966 as a response to racial tension and a celebration of Caribbean communities in London. The festival has grown into a powerful display of multicultural unity, with its foundations firmly rooted in Trinidadian carnival traditions.
What began as a small local celebration is now a globally renowned event welcoming over two million people annually, a testament to the strength, creativity and spirit of Britain’s Caribbean diaspora.
How to Get into the Carnival Spirit
Whether you’re dancing in the parade or soaking up the atmosphere from the sidelines, Carnival is all about expression, colour and connection. Here’s some inspiration to help you prep:
Fashion: Bring the Heat
Think bold. Think bright. Think breathable. Carnival fashion is your chance to go full flamboyant. Beaded bras, feathered headpieces and glittering hotpants aren’t just for parade performers, you can go as extra as you like.
For casual revellers, try mesh tops, cut-out dresses, cargo shorts, or co-ords in electric colours.
Add body gems, face glitter, and chunky jewellery for full effect.
Footwear tip: trainers > sandals. You’ll be on your feet for hours – comfort is key.
Food: Taste the Islands
Follow your nose and you’ll find something incredible.
Notting Hill Carnival offers food from around the world. Traditionally the main emphasis is on an array of varied Caribbean foods. ‘Jamaican Jerk Chicken’ is King , and the smell of a jerk pit is the immediate ‘scent of Notting Hill Carnival’. Look out for that, also Trinidadian ‘Roti’, and Guyanese ‘Pepper Pot’ are a must try. If you don’t eat meat there are also veggie options at most stalls and an increase in solely vegan food traders this year.
There are over 300 stalls to choose from, so come and enjoy an all-time favourite or try something new.
Beauty: Glow Goals
Sweat-proof makeup is essential. Think dewy finishes, bright eyeshadows, and bold lips. Neon liners and metallic highlighters fit right in. And don’t forget:
SPF! It might be London, but August sun can catch you out.
Setting spray and blotting papers.
A mini mist or fan to keep your cool.
Tips for the day & info
Travel light: A crossbody bag or bum bag is your best friend.
Stay hydrated: Water between rum punches is a smart move.
Plan your route: Public transport can be busy – check TFL updates before heading out.
Respect the vibes: Carnival is about freedom, but also respect and community. Embrace the spirit and look out for each other.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a Carnival veteran, Notting Hill Carnival 2025 promises an unforgettable mix of culture, creativity and Caribbean joy. Come with dancing shoes and your loudest outfit, the streets are calling.
